Shirley Droste

July 11, 1926 — August 24, 2013

Droste, Shirley. With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother on August 24, 2013 in Sarasota, Florida. She died peacefully in her home with her husband by her side. Surviving members of her family include beloved husband Alvin, sons, David Susan, James Christine, Timothy Meg and daughters Bethann Chuck Reed and Mary Kay David Zurcher. Shirley had nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren she adored. Her parents, Joseph and Louise Calcaterra and her only brother Joseph, preceded her in death.
Shirley was born in Detroit on July 11, 1926. She attended St. David's High School and upon graduation enrolled as a Cadet Nurse in the Nursing Program at Mercy College. After graduation, Shirley practiced nursing at Holy Cross Hospital for nine years. It was during this period that Shirley met and married Alvin, a design engineer at Chrysler. Alvin and Shirley raised their five children in suburban Detroit. They loved traveling with their family and became world travelers after their children were grown. Following Alvin's retirement in 1989, they moved to Sarasota, keeping a summer home in Michigan. They enjoyed entertaining friends, attending the theater, and walking the local beaches. In her quiet moments Shirley was always reading.
