Mrs. Diana Sweet

August 12, 1917 — May 19, 2017

Diana Sweet, 99, of Newcastle, Wyoming, died Friday, May 19, 2017, at Weston County Manor. She was born August 12, 1917 at Elk Mountain, South Dakota, the daughter of Herbert H. and Fannie (Christie) Musgrave. Diana lived with her parents and brothers Edward and Gerald at saw mill camps at Elk Mountain and Pringle, South Dakota. The family moved to Beaver Creek outside of Newcastle, Wyoming, where her father worked and managed the Charlie Martens Ranch. She attended Newcastle High School and graduated with the Class of 1936.
On Beaver Creek, the community was like one big family. Her family was friends with everyone who lived there. She remained close with these neighbors her entire lifetime. On November 8, 1939, she married Floyd Sweet, the love of her life. They made their home on Beaver Creek on the Sweet Ranch, just two miles from where she had been living with her parents. Floyd and Diana raised two children, Patricia (Patti) and Floyd, Jr. (Tom). Diana remained in the same home until age 88, when she moved into Newcastle.
Both Floyd and Diana had the same attitude of helping people whenever they could. They opened up part of their property that was the Sweet Campground on Beaver Creek to the Newcastle Girl Scouts for their summer camp each summer for many years. Adults today mention how much fun they had at the Sweet Ranch during their Girl Scout camping days.
Diana was also extremely devoted to her family, and then her extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her life revolved around ways she could cook for them, entertain them, and just spend time with them. They all knew they were very special and very loved.
Diana was a charter member of the Busy Beaver Homemakers Club. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron and holding many other offices over the years. She was also a member of the Daughter of the Nile and a member of the First United Methodist Church. In addition, she was an active member of the Weston County CowBelles. Whatever was going on in any of these organizations, she would give her all to help in any way she could. The groups always depended on her service.
She worked at Boyer Furniture for many years until the store closed. Then she worked fourteen years at the Wyoming Department of Transportation, giving the morning road and travel report. During the winters, she would be at work by 6:30 a.m. to be on her radio for the snow plows on the road.
Diana never met a stranger. She loved all people, visiting with them and helping them any way she could. She had the gift of serving and of hospitality; she was the happiest when she was helping someone out. In her later years, she enjoyed spending her winters in Texas. This gave her another set of good friends. She touched many lives during her life, right up until her death.
Survivors include her daughter Patti (Lee) Sweet of Katy, TX; her daughter-in-law Toni Sweet of Wheatland, WY; her grandchildren Kevin (Bonnie) Sweet of Salt Lake City, UT; Steve (Sharla) Sweet of Missoula, MT; Cindy (Mike) Pratt of Katy, TX; Mariah (Steve) Walker of Douglas, WY; Shane (Marissa) Sweet of Newcastle, WY; Kara (Brian) Sweet of Newcastle, WY; 18 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd Sweet, her parents, her two brothers, and her son Tom.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Worden Mortuary from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Services will be held Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at First United Methodist Church of Newcastle at 4:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery with burial rites by Chapter 30 Order of the Eastern Star.
