John Button

May 1, 1956 — March 3, 2024

John was born on May 1, 1956 in Waukegan, Illinois to Duane and Ann Button. He passed peacefully at home with his beloved wife, Stacey, at his side on March 3, 2024 after a long illness.

John was the oldest of four children and graduated from Carmel Catholic High School in 1974. Although he never went to a formal college program, John always had a strong desire to learn something new.

John married his lifelong partner, Stacey Behrens three times on October 28, 1979, November 3, 1979, and August 19, 1990.

He operated Button Construction from 1973 to 1997 in Illinois. While in Illinois, John raised Red Angus, milked Holsteins, and began a Christmas tree farm. Then, in 1997, John and Stacey followed John’s dream of ranching ‘out West’ moving to Custer County. He loved hunting, reading, working with his hands, going for drives, and caring for his cattle. He worked hard to provide for his family and help his neighbors. John was an active member of his community: an Elk Mountain school board member, Highlands volunteer fire fighter, and Custer County weed and pest board member. Later in his life, John accepted Christ into his heart again with the help of his dear friend, Arthur. John loved his relationship with The Lord, his children, and grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife, Stacey, his children Jason Button and Susie (Andrew) Pond, his grandchildren Olivia and Kutter, his siblings Kathy (Jim) Zorc, Judy Button, and many cousins.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, Duane and Ann Button, paternal grandparents, Robert and Jenny Button and maternal grandparents, Arcangelo and Teresa Piagentini.

In lieu of flowers, John requested gifts be sent to the Weston County Humane Society or the Weston County 4-H Program.
