Helen McCoskey

January 27, 1919 — September 13, 2014

Helen E. McCoskey, age 95, a resident of Royal Oak, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2014 at South Lyon Senior Care Center. She was born on January 27, 1919 in Parkhill, Ontario to Dougald and Margaret McCormick. Helen moved to Detroit at the age of 17 to attend Detroit Business College after which she worked at Michigan Mutual Insurance. She met and married John R. Bob McCoskey and moved to Royal Oak where, together, they raised six children. Once her children were in school, Helen began working for the C.A. Hull Company, retiring in 1982. She volunteered at Shrine Church and at Beaumont Hospital, and enjoyed working at the polling station on election days. Throughout her life, Helen was a devoted fan of the Tigers, the Lions, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. She herself was an avid golfer, bowler, and Bridge player. She loved cooking and baking for her family and friends. Helen will be remembered for her thoughtful ways, her quick wit, and her wonderful pies. Beloved wife of the late John. Loving mother of Margaret John Evans, Elizabeth Guy King, Charlene Ronald Hatlen, John, Mary Joseph Schauerte, and Christine Larry VerHulst. Dear sister of Mary Edgar, Angela William Verhelle, and the late Rita Bayley, Mildred Stone, Veronica Doyle, Eleanor Wiese, and Peter McCormick. Loving grandmother to William Evans, Kerry King, Elizabeth Schauerte, Anton Schauerte, Claire Adam Sierakowski, Michael VerHulst, and Laura VerHulst. She also leaves behind her many nieces and nephews. Visitation Sunday 5-8 p.m. and Monday 2-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. scripture service at the William Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 705 W 11 Mile Rd. 4 blocks E of Woodward, Royal Oak. Instate Tuesday 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass 10 a.m. at the National Shrine of the Little Flower Church, Royal Oak. The burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan.
